Kansas City Auction
from:I don't know how I was talked into going to a Kansas City auto auction by my friend, but I am sure glad that I was. He had been telling me, ever since he hit his first Kansas City auction, that I just simply had to check one out. It wasn't a Kansas City auction that sold cars - it was when he was sixteen, and he was in no position to buy a car. Instead of that, he got his first guitar there, an old Fender with trashed electronics, but great action, and a sweet sound once he got it going. He would hardly ever go to a store after that. He made little money with his odd jobs, but what money he did make he would take to the Kansas City auctions. He became, I would joke, the youngest old lady I had ever met, going to a different Kansas City auction nearly every weekend. He would sometimes pick up some electronic gear at a Kansas City auction, other times some music gear. When he first turned 18, he took what little money he could and went to a Kansas City auction to get some land for himself. First he took us camping, and then finally he built a house there, where he lived on five acres for almost nothing for many years.
So, by the time he took me to a Kansas City auction, I guess my curiosity was somewhat aroused. We went to a government auction. It was where you would go to get things seized by the government, either for debts to the IRS, or for some other reason such as convictions on drug or racketeering charges. I was starting to look for a car, but that was not really what interested me at the Kansas City auction. For me, all the excitement I felt was about the crowd. They were so into it, seething back and forth to get a look at the stock. I have never really seen a room so crowded with excited people as I saw at that Kansas City auction, and there is just no question on that. Although it was hard for me to understand why - I mean, who really cares all that much about cars and houses when they are all more or less the same - it was kind of neat to get a chance to look on in the face of such enthusiasm.
