What You Should Know about Internet Auction Sites

The world of shopping for just about any commodity has opened up exponentially through internet auction sites. Any type of item or service that is desired can now be obtained through a simple click of the computer keyboard button, but does ease in buying equate to smart buying?

Before the 1980’s, individuals who were seeking a specific type of car, piece of clothing, equipment, food or other saleable item were confined to their range of transportation to find it. Sure, they might be willing to travel 50 to 100 miles to attend an auction that featured the item they desired, but then there was the matter of getting it back home. Once internet service providers emerged in the 80’s, however, the advancement of computer and internet reach expanded quickly; driven largely by commerce as a means of connecting sellers and potential buyers in an effective and inexpensive manner. It was only a matter of time before a number of internet auction sites would open to offer a plethora of commodities to eagerly awaiting consumers.

There is virtually no product that cannot be bought or sold on the internet. From comic books to high end homes and luxury toys, these internet “open markets” make it easy to buy or sell from the comfort of your own home. In addition, those buyers seeking a particularly hard to find item now have no geographic boundaries that limit their search. These features make these sites seem like the answer to a prayer, but are they really better than buying in person?

When using internet auction sites, you open yourself to a world of both genuine and unscrupulous individuals. Protect yourself as much as possible by arming yourself with knowledge:

Be sure to know the site’s “Terms of Use”; do they charge fees, offer buyer/seller protection, allow mediation or have specific rules of conduct?

  • You are essentially purchasing a product that is sight unseen; pictures and information may not be truly depictive of the item that you receive.
  • Methods of payment vary from site to site; never send cash or use a money wiring service to pay. Also, know ahead of time what to do in case something goes wrong.
  • Deal only with reputable sellers whenever possible. Stay within the confines of the site.

While the internet auction sites bring the world of shopping to your doorstep, it pays to be a smart shopper in the virtual world as well as the real world.
